Auteurgal has posted about the references Boyd has used in Layer 3 on the William Gibson community forum. Idoru and Neuromancer

When you search up on ARG's you get similar ideas in past literature. WG's Pattern Recognition for one.

The things I've found on The Music and Boyd suggest to me that Boyd is making this about the bands biography in a symbolic way. Not necessarily the band members but in a very abstract way as if the band could be personified. The more I find the more I get excited about it.

This is very very different from other ARG's theres a tremendous amount of cliches in others almost like they are cookie cutter mainstream hollywood films. This is actually very serious despite the very abstract art parts.

I must admit when following the threads on unfiction I thought the Alice and white rabbit references to the rabbit hole were just another same old story and was expected for people to find some tea stained wannabe manuscript and some formula to some drugs that aliens introduced...............you get the idea lol.

Yeh this is really interesting. Very well thought out. Also Pikilili I saw a resaerch vid of yours. It showed the behind the scenes of arg's and working on a narrative alone (despite being cliche) had a massive team who seemed to stretching themselves.
Although I don't think theres as many involved I do think that theres got to be a team working with boyd on this maybe even the band members themselves.

So its symbolic of the album's coming to being.

I think what were getting is back-story.
Like Alice in Wonderland was big influence on Psychedelic rock etc.
The Gibson references being more to do with the present and our use of this technology.
I've only read 2 of his books Neuromancer and Mona lisa overdrive which are more to do with future cyberpunk.
Theres lots themes in Neuromancer that can be related.

Cover of the UK edition

Author William Gibson
Country United Kingdom
Language English
Series The Bridge trilogy
Genre(s) Science fiction, Dystopian novel

Preceded by Virtual Light
Followed by All Tomorrow's Parties <---- Gig here perhaps?

For the Japanese phenomenon, see Japanese idol.

Idoru is the second book in William Gibson's Bridge trilogy. Idoru is a science-fiction novel set in a postmodern, dystopian, cyberpunk future. The main character, Colin Laney has a talent for identifying nodal points, analogous to Gibson's own:

Laney’s node-spotter function [from Idoru] is some sort of metaphor for whatever it is that I actually do. There are bits of the literal future right here, right now, if you know how to look for them. Although I can’t tell you how; it’s a non-rational process.[1]

As of 2006, an anime adaptation of Idoru is rumoured to be in the early stages of development.
